Actions taken after a hit-and-run accident in San Diego, California

There are certain steps you can take to protect your right to compensation after a hit-and-run accident. Not only can they help authorities arrest the driver, but they can also support your claim for maximum compensation. These actions include:

  1. Gather as much information as possible at the scene of the accident – Be sure to write down the license plate number, make, model and color of the vehicle that hit you or your car. If possible, take a few photos of the affected vehicle. This information is critical to identifying and locating the vehicle involved in your case.
  2. Contact the authorities as soon as possible – The sooner you inform the police about the accident, the quicker they can arrest the driver. In addition, when contacting the police, create an official incident report. In a few days, you can request an accident report from either the police station that handled the accident or the California DMV. This document will assist you when making a claim later.
  3. Obtain the names and contact information of anyone who may have witnessed the incident – Remember that witnesses to an accident may stay to check on your well-being, but will often leave once police and ambulance arrive. It's important to quickly collect their names and contact information. Witnesses can play a crucial role in your case, for example by confirming that the other vehicle hit your car and not the other way around.
  4. Seek medical help immediately – It is important to see a doctor as soon as possible to assess possible injuries. Adhering to the recommended treatment plan is critical to your recovery. Additionally, seeing a doctor ensures detailed documentation of your injuries, which can be helpful in making a claim.
  5. Notify your insurance carrier of the accident – While it is important to complete this task quickly, it is also important to ensure that you only focus on the facts. Remember, you are under no obligation to acknowledge or assign blame. Additionally, it is advisable not to provide a written statement or agree to a settlement until you have consulted with a California hit-and-run attorney.
  6. Consult our hit and run lawyers – If you are unsure, call us at (888) 488-1391 for a free consultation. We will review your case, help you communicate with the insurance company, and, if necessary, assist you in filing a personal injury claim.
