4-time MLB All-Star retires after 14 seasons

Colorado Rockies star outfielder and four-time MLB All-Star Charlie Blackmon is retiring after 14 seasons spent exclusively with the Rockies, he announced Monday.

Blackmon, 38, announced his retirement from MLB on social media. He will play six more games for the Rockies – all at the team's home stadium, Coors Field – before the 2024 MLB regular season ends and he retires.

“I have been fortunate to call the city of Denver and the Colorado Rockies my baseball home for my entire career,” Blackmon wrote in an Instagram post. “I am grateful for the support of this organization, my teammates and most importantly, the Rockies fans. It is with a grateful heart and the memories of a career that I choose a new path.”

Blackmon retires as the Rockies' all-time leader in triples with 67. He is also the second-leading player in Rockies history in hits (1,797), runs (991), extra-base hits (626), doubles (333), stolen bases (148), total bases (2,942) and games played (1,618). He won the National League batting title in 2017 with a batting average of .331 and was also the MLB's all-time leader in hits (213), runs (137), total bases (387) and triples (14) that same season.

Blackmon was named an All-Star four times, from 2014 and 2017 to 2019. He twice won the Silver Slugger Award, which is given annually to the best offensive players at each position in the MLB.

The Rockies will hold a ceremony at Coors Field on Sunday before their final home game of the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team said in a post to X.

“When Charlie told me of his plans to retire, I got a little emotional, as I'm sure many fans will when they hear the news that one of the greatest Rockies of all time will no longer be on the field,” Rockies owner and CEO Dick Monfort said in a statement. “It has been an absolute privilege to watch Charlie's career from start to finish here at Coors Field.”

“Charlie's passion and dedication to the game of baseball, this organization and our great fans was on display every day and I can't thank him enough for putting his heart and soul into every game and every at-bat during his 14 years here. Charlie is a Rockie through and through and although his playing days are over, he will continue to be a part of this team in many ways well into the future. We look forward to celebrating Charlie this weekend and wish Charlie and his family nothing but the best in the years to come.”
