Colts bench Anthony Richardson for Joe Flacco

Colts bench Anthony Richardson for Joe Flacco

Colts head coach Shane Steichen has decided to make the move he apparently sought in his Monday press conference.

According to multiple reports, the Colts are benching Anthony Richardson to start Joe Flacco on Sunday night against the Vikings.

Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in last year's draft, has been woefully inconsistent in his six starts this season, completing just 44.4 percent of his passes for 958 yards with four touchdowns and seven interceptions. He rushed for 242 yards with one touchdown despite recovering a league-high six fumbles.

Richardson also caused some controversy in Sunday's loss to the Texans when he left for a play in the third quarter because he was tired. For this he was criticized both internally and externally.

Flacco appeared in four games this year, including two starts when Richardson injured his hip. Flacco, the 2023 AP Comeback Player of the Year, has completed 65.7 percent of his throws for 716 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception this year.

As a rookie last year, Richardson only played four games due to injury.

Currently 4-4, the Colts have a chance at a spot in the postseason if the offense can become more consistent. At least for now, the club will turn to Flacco to make this happen.
