Joe Mazzulla proposes a unique rule change for the NBA

Joe Mazzulla has one of the most creative minds in the NBA and that was evident Tuesday in his weekly interview with Zolak and Bertrand on 98.5 The Sports Hub. The idea of possible rule changes was brought up in an interview with the Celtics coach when Mazzulla decided to take the conversation in a completely different direction with a new idea.

“Basketball is one of the few sports where there is no power play,” Mazzulla told Zolak and Bertrand. “Let's say you get a technical error or, let's say you get a take foul, you get the one shot but you don't really get rewarded for it because if you miss it you don't get the reward for the take -Foul. “There should be something like a power play where if you get a foul or a technical foul you have to play five-on-four for five seconds or three passes.”

Bertrand floated the idea of having a complete possession on a power play, but Mazzulla tried to downplay the length of a potential advantage.

“I think this might be a little extreme, but I think we should introduce power plays where when you commit a foul the guy doesn't play the ball out to the side, he goes to the other side of the half court, which he does “can’t leave the half-court circle until about three seconds,” Mazzulla said.

The Celtics coach also complained that the NBA allows fewer confrontations than other professional sports.

“The biggest thing we're robbing people of from an entertainment perspective is that you can't fight anymore,” Mazzulla explained. “We should bring the fight back. If you're going to talk about stealing entertainment from the league, what's more entertaining than a little brawl? You're allowed to go to a baseball game – how come you're allowed to clear the benches at baseball? How come they are allowed to do that in ice hockey? I don't understand.”

Video reviews have been a regular addition to the NBA in recent years, something Mazzulla isn't a fan of when it comes to hand-to-hand combat.

“Every time someone gets clubbed, you don’t have to go to the monitor to see if there’s an offense,” Mazzulla said before making more complaints.

“I just don’t understand why some sports are allowed to clear the benches. They have clubs and guns. Not us, we just have fun. I mean, the other sport has one of the hardest surface game tools with the puck and sticks, and yet we can't throw a little?”

Mazzulla and the Celtics will look to build on their 4-0 start with a four-game road trip that begins Wednesday night at Indiana.
