Dodgers fans come to NYC still feeling confident after their Game 4 loss to the Yankees

Dodgers fans were ready for a World Series sweep ahead of Game 4 on Tuesday night. But the Yankees beat the odds and scored an 11-4 victory at their home stadium in the Bronx, putting New York on the schedule for good.

Still, with a 3-1 lead, LA is just one game away from winning it all. And that's what the fans in New York had in mind when they cheered on the Boys in Blue. “Good luck next year,” said one who traveled across the country to cheer on the Dodgers at Yankee Stadium. Many are hoping for a repeat of what happened when New York and LA last met in the World Series 43 years ago.

“I'm wearing my Dodgers jersey from 1981, the last time they won at Yankee Stadium,” one L.A. fan told KCAL News' Darren Haynes from Times Square. “We hope so again this evening.”

Game 4 started strong for LA as Freddie Freeman hit a two-run home run in the first inning, breaking a major league record by becoming the first player to hit a home run in six consecutive World Series games – since his home run in the Atlanta's last game is two World Series games against Houston in 2021.

According to ESPN, he is now the second player to hit a home run in four straight games in a single World Series.

But the game also got exciting from the start when a fan wearing Yankees gear ripped the ball out of Mookie Betts' glove in the first inning as he reached over a wall to catch it. The Yankees said the fan and a man who grabbed Metts' other hand were both escorted out will not be allowed back for game 5.

New York came to life with Anthony Volpe's grand slam in the eighth inning, propelling the team to an 11-4 victory, while Dodgers manager Dave Roberts retained his top relievers, a decision that was not without criticism.

It's a risky strategy. However, many are convinced that it will pay off, as Los Angeles Times sports columnist Bill Plaschke writes: “For the third time this postseason, the Dodgers, pleased with their leadership and securing their heavily indebted replacements for later games, put down a punt,” writes Plaschke. “It sounds crazy. It sounds risky… but guess what? It works. Two punts helped them earn a four-to-two victory over the New York Mets in the National League Championship Series.”

“Punting has worked for them before, and it will work here too,” he writes. “The Dodgers are still firmly in control.”
