Bushfire in the college area leads to road closures and evacuations are ordered

A rapidly spreading fire occurred in the college area at Fairmount and Montezuma streets Thursday afternoon.

San Diego Fire Rescue Posted on X that multiple units were at the scene and the ravine behind Lucille Drive in Talmadge and Alvarado Estates was burning.

SDSU police and SDFD teams evacuated homes above the ravine, according to SDFD spokesman Jose Ysea.

A mandatory evacuation order has been issued for the following area: south of Alvarado Canyon Road, west of Hewlett Drive, north of Monroe Avenue, east of Montezuma Road. You can find an evacuation map here.

A temporary evacuation point is located at Allied Gardens Recreation Center (5155 Greenbrier Ave, San Diego).

Hardy Elementary School was evacuated to the Aztec football practice field. Officials said parents can use Canyon Crest to access the arena and pick up their children.

“We live a block away and the fire is right across the street. So we had a mandatory evacuation,” said Hardy Elementary School parent Bipan Shrestha. “So my girlfriend and I got in a car with our dog and tried to drive in here, but there was no way we could make it in time. So instead I just grabbed my dog ​​and went… I said “I.” I'm going to pick up my son first.

The following streets will be closed until at least midnight, San Diego police said on X.

  • Collwood Boulevard, between Monroe Avenue and Montezuma Road.
  • Montezuma Road, between Fairmount Avenue and 55th Street.
  • Fairmount Ave, from Interstate 8 to Aldine Drive.
  • Camino del Rio South at Fairmount Avenue.
  • Take Interstate 8 eastbound at the Fairmount Avenue exit.

SDSU said there is no immediate threat to the campus.

There is currently a fire burning in an area of ​​37 hectares.
