Denver Nuggets win easily at home against the Jazz 129-103

The Denver Nuggets took care of the win against the undermanned Utah Jazz, winning 129-103. The Nuggets scored 39 points on Utah turnovers and ran all night despite playing back-to-back games. They used the game to get to grips with the starters and found some flow on the bench at the end. Nikola Jokic scored another Sombor double with 27 points, 16 rebounds and 9 assists in just three quarters. Michael Porter Jr. added 20 points, Christian Braun had 17 and Julian Strawther was off the bench with 19 points in what ended up being an easy win for Denver this season.

Game review

Utah won the tip and Walker Kessler got to the line to make 1 of 2. Westbrook was fouled on the other side by Kessler under the basket but missed both free throws, but Nikola tipped in his own miss the next time and then MPJ hit a baseline jumper. Cody Williams made a layup for Utah, but Aaron Gordon threw a great oop to Westbrook for a dunk. After a turnover, Christian Braun made a layup in transition to give Denver an 8-5 lead. Jokic kicked to MPJ for a corner three, then got a steal that he passed forward to Mike for a transition 3 to extend the lead to 9. Aaron Gordon continued Minnesota's good shooting with a corner three of his own, while Jokic gobbled up rebounds and forced Utah to foul him. Jokic hit free throws, Porter sank another long three-pointer and Denver had a 22-8 lead midway through the quarter.

Westbrook sailed up one end to get a steal on an oop attempt and grabbed a rebound at the other end after Braun missed a three-pointer. However, he again missed both free throws and after transition shots and a three-pointer from Keyonte George, the Jazz reduced the deficit to 7. Julian Strawther came in and immediately got free throws, but John Collins answered with a layup on the other side. Jokic hit a paint bucket, Peyton Watson was blocked on a layup but was fouled on the second attempt, and Braun was cuffed for a jump ball on the way to a transition bucket. Jokic was warned for a weak foul on a three-pointer and Johnny Juzang made all three free throws, and Nikola's frustration at not getting calls on the other end was evident. Strawther was whistled for an offensive foul for sending his leg out, which was also dangerous, but Hunter Tyson got a steal on a deflection and hit a layup-and-foul. Strawther hit a push shot and a long three-pointer as the bench increased its lead, and despite a sloppy end to the quarter with a few fouls and turnovers, the Nuggets finished the first game 37-26.

Watson got to the line at the start of the second period and made both free throws, which were answered with a pair by Collin Sexton. DeAndre Jordan missed a layup and Eubanks made a basket shot on the other side. Sexton and Westbrook traded three-pointers, but Myjhailiuk also made a Utah three-pointer as Denver's bench struggled on both sides early in the quarter. Braun turned the ball over on offense, Sexton jumped and Utah got within 42-38. Walker Kessler dunked to take a one-point deficit and force Malone's rage timeout, but Williams still made a layup afterward to tie the game. Jokic had a nice pass to Braun for a layup, then went to the floor for a possession to force a 24-second turnover and hit MPJ with a flawless 60-foot pass down the sideline for a porter -Three to make it 47:42. Jokic then hit another three-pointer for Braun to bring the lead to 8, then got free throws after a tackle to regain a double-digit lead. Gordon hit a layup around Kessler, then Mike got to the line in transition to take a 58-46 lead. Collins stopped a 14-0 Denver run with free throws and Eubanks made a layup for Utah, but AG hit another three-pointer. Keyonte George responded with a three-pointer of his own and then a strange technical was called on Hunter Tyson, who had good energy in the half. Denver missed a couple of threes from AG and MPJ, but Braun made free throws and Gordon forced an inbounds turnover, which led to a Braun dunk against AG and Denver took a 65-56 lead into halftime.

Jokic was beaten up the court by Kessler early in the second half after Jokic missed a shot, but Nikola got the layup back on the other side. Then Jokic had a shot clock violation after an uncalled foul and Denver started flat. Braun was credited with a layup after a keeper, but Jokic missed a three-pointer and Denver's legs looked like they were feeling the deficit. Westbrook made a save early in the game, but Gordon converted a Braun transition miss to give Denver a 71-58 final score. George hit a layup for Utah, but Braun responded with a pair of three-pointers. Collins and Johnny Juzang both made three-pointers for the Jazz, but Jokic made a layup and then MPJ had a transition shot to push the lead back to 13 while Denver's active hands kept the turnovers going and the transition game hopping. Jokic sank a three-pointer to make it 84:68, then drew a technical foul and hit a baseline jumper over Eubanks. He had the ball taken away from him under the basket for a basket, but then he came back with a three-pointer, giving Denver a 20-point lead. Sensabaugh hit a Utah three-pointer, but Jokic answered from deep again and then Strawther missed a layup thanks to Kessler, but got the rebound and the basket. Jokic had a massive 19-point quarter to give Denver a 99-75 lead heading into the final frame.

The Nuggets gave up the first four points of the quarter, but Strawther hit a three-pointer to put Denver on the scoreboard and score over 100 points. Jordan made two putbacks, George answered with a three-pointer and Watson had two nice layups as Denver claimed a lead of over 20 points. Jordan had another dunk, Strawther another three-pointer and Hunter Tyson had a great breakaway dunk as Denver's bench finally found a little rhythm. When rookie Trey Alexander entered the game, he was already in garbage time. However, they kept the pace going with exchange throws from Strawther and Zeke Nnaji and Denver took a final victory of 129-103.

Final thoughts

Jokic was a monster. He was +16 in the first half and could have been more, but Westbrook's backup minutes dragged Russ down to just +4 in the half despite starting with Jokic. Nikola did everything for this team tonight, he posted 27 points, 16 rebounds, 9 assists and a steal and was +31 in three quarters which is all he played. He had some amazing passes, ran the court hard all game, made three 3-pointers and kept this game out of reach despite the poor bench performance in the first half that allowed Utah to tie the score again in the second quarter . The struggling Utah Jazz had no answers and shouldn't have – the best player in the world showed his skills tonight and it showed on the scoreboard.

Denver was great in transition. The Nuggets outrebounded the Jazz by 13 and had 28 fast-break points, not counting some second-chance points and longer possessions. That the Nuggets were willing to run the entire game despite playing in back-to-back games was not only a good sign for their conditioning, but also a way to overcome the limitations of the current bench. With these tips and hands in the passing lanes, Denver must generate balls more easily and avoid playing against tight defenses. Some of that came from the starting lineup, but that energy can carry over to the backup minutes as well.

The Jazz aren't a good benchmark for the bench, but it was good for these guys to get minutes. The first bench stint was brutal, but the only starter to play in the fourth quarter was Westbrook, who had to have chemistry with the bench – and the Nuggets won the fourth 30-28. Hunter Tyson got minutes both on the bench and alongside Jokic, but the Jokic minutes seemed to put him on a good path to using his frantic play to look for loose boards and drive through fouls in transition. Julian Strawther also played alongside Jokic and on the bench, and although he picked up five fouls (again), he worked hard on his rhythm to make cuts and shoot threes. Finding their rhythm with the starters seemed to catch on well, and it could help Denver find ways to integrate backup players like Strawther into more of a hybrid role – if he can limit his foul tendencies.

Regardless, by finally playing minutes where they didn't break down, players like Peyton Watson and Zeke Nnaji were able to find some consistency that they can hopefully carry forward as the season progresses. The bench doesn't have to be great – it just has to find a way to not drag down the starters, and it was wonderful to have all of Denver's regular starters sitting firmly on the bench the entire quarter without even a hint of Afraid to give gift for the first time this season.
