Spurs have yet to find consistent form as they aim to return to the Champions League after finishing fifth last season and winning just a single consecutive league game in their first ten league games this season.

But despite failing to match their excellent start under Postecoglou last season – they started November 2023 as league leaders – they continue to show remarkable resilience under the Australian.

After responding to the disappointing loss at Palace by beating Manchester City to reach the EFL Cup quarter-finals and continuing their quest for a first midweek title since 2008, they conceded their first here for the 12th time in 14 home league games Goal conceded in 2024.

However, by the end of the season they had equaled the Premier League record for home wins by conceding a goal for the first time in a single year – their eighth.

Villa's opening goal came against the run of play, but via a well-known weakness for the hosts: a combination of Pedro Porro and Rodrigo Bentancur deflected Digne's free kick towards Guglielmo Vicario, who could only parry the ball into Rogers' path.

The hosts were relieved to see that Watkins, who remained quiet for most of the first half, failed to double the lead when he pulled his shot wide before half-time.

But the equalizer at the start of the second half galvanized Spurs, who emerged from the break with renewed determination while preventing Villa from having a shot on target.

Captain Son played a key role in his return after a two-game absence due to injury, but the South Korean striker was visibly surprised to be substituted just minutes after setting up Johnson's equalizer.

That allowed Solanke to take center stage, with the 27-year-old showing his class, particularly on his debut, and Postecoglou will be hoping his big-money signing can continue to build confidence to help his team find consistency.

“The belief in these players is great. We stick to our principles and when we do that, we are hard to stop,” Postecoglou said.

“I felt like the momentum was going our way. We knew we would finish strong, and if we kicked it up a few gears to the best of our ability, we knew we would be hard to stop.”
