James Van Der Beek reveals colon cancer diagnosis

According to a recently released statement, the “Dawson's Creek” star has “privately” dealt with his cancer diagnosis.

James Van Der Beek is looking positive amid the recent health crisis.

The 47-year-old “Dawson's Creek” star revealed that he has been diagnosed with colon cancer in a statement to People magazine released on Sunday.

“I have colon cancer,” Van Der Beek told the magazine. “I have grappled with this diagnosis privately and, with the support of my incredible family, have taken steps to resolve it.”

Colon cancer, or colon cancer, occurs when polyps, or growths, develop on the inner wall of the colon, according to the Cleveland Clinic. If left untreated, the cancer can spread to other areas of the body.

Although Van Der Beek did not elaborate on his treatment, the actor added: “There is reason for optimism and I feel good.”

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Van Der Beek for comment.

Colorectal cancer, the third most common cancer in the United States, typically affects people age 50 and older, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Over the past 15 years, the number of people ages 20 to 49 diagnosed with colorectal cancer has increased by about 1.5% each year.

Van Der Beek has been married to management consultant Kimberly Brook since 2010. The couple have six children together: daughters Olivia, 14; Annabel, 10; Emilia, 8; Gwendolyn, 6; and sons Joshua, 12; and Jeremiah, 3.

The actor's health problems do not seem to have slowed down his career. Van Der Beek recently guest-starred in the western crime series “Walker” and is expected to appear in the Tubi romance film “Sidelined The QB and Me.”
