Man United did not give 100 percent in the draw against Twente – Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag questioned the mentality of his players after Manchester United's 1-1 draw with FC Twente in the Europa League, saying that the Dutch team “fought for every meter and we didn't”.

United took the lead through Christian Eriksen's goal in the first half, but fell behind in the second half when Sam Lammers took advantage of an Eriksen error to equalise.

Eriksen said afterwards that FC Twente “wanted it more”, and when Ten Hag presented this assessment, the United coach agreed.

“Yes, you could see that it was the game of their lives,” said Ten Hag. “They fought for every meter, we didn't. And 99 percent is not enough, you have to give 100 percent.”

“You have to decide the game, you have to finish it. You have to shoot for the second goal and then you decide the game.”

“We are very ambitious and when you are ambitious you have to perform and prove yourself. Especially today in the second half we were too complacent and didn't make it over the line as a team.”

Ten Hag was particularly disappointed that United were unable to capitalise on their chances. Their away game at Crystal Palace on Saturday ended in a 0-0 draw and despite having 19 shots on goal against Twente, they only managed one goal.

Scoring has been a problem all season, with United scoring just five goals in five Premier League games.

“We have to work on that,” said Ten Hag. “That's clear. We have to be more consistent in situations like this, but I don't think that was the only problem tonight. We have to keep going in the second half. Be consistent. Finish it off, score the second goal and the game is over.”

“We have enough players across the offense who can score goals.”
