In an armed response, police unleashed a swarm of men that caused chaos in Petaluma

“Please avoid the Petaluma Marina area off Lakeville for police operations,” police said in a statement.

Authorities are still responding to a situation Tuesday involving a man who reportedly led law enforcement on a high-speed chase through downtown before driving into the water at the Petaluma Marina on Lakeville Highway.

The chase began when Sonoma County Sheriff's Office deputies pursued a vehicle within the county's jurisdiction outside the city, Petaluma Police Deputy Chief Nick McGowan said.

The man led authorities, including a CHP helicopter, south toward the Petaluma Marina, and at 12:34 p.m. Petaluma police issued an emergency alert warning residents: “Please avoid the Petaluma area Marina in front of Lakeville due to police operations.”

According to McGowan, the man is believed to be armed. He was reportedly in the river itself at some point as authorities worked to contain it.

Officers were still working to resolve the situation. As of 2 p.m., officers had set up observation stations along the riverfront on the Lakeville side and on the Petaluma Boulevard South side.

According to unconfirmed reports from police scanners and witness statements on social media, the man complained about Tuesday's election. Some of the reports included reports of wild behavior, including him being naked and trying to suffocate himself with shoelaces.

Before police descended on the river, a witness reported online that he saw a dark gray vehicle driving down Washington Street at a high rate of speed.

Numerous Sonoma County sheriff's deputies, California Highway Patrol officers and Petaluma Fire Department personnel were still at the marina along with Petaluma police Tuesday afternoon. At least one helicopter circled overhead and K-9 officers were also present.

Employees at a Sonoma County administrative office north of Santa Rosa were reportedly on lockdown Tuesday afternoon.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

Deputy Rob Dillion of the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office told the Argus-Courier that a warrant was issued for the Petaluma Marina suspect over the weekend for alleged domestic violence and weapon threats. The name of the suspect was not immediately known.

Early Tuesday, a patrol officer saw the man in a vehicle north of Petaluma and tried to pull him over, which initiated the pursuit, Dillion said.

The vehicle traveled through a portion of downtown Petaluma before heading south onto Lakeville Street, then entering a dead end at the marina and entering the water.

While sitting in the back seat of the drenched vehicle, the man displayed what appeared to be a weapon, Dillion said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
