For the second straight year, the Green Bay Packers sent a veteran defensive player to an AFC team at the trade deadline to preserve draft capital and clear the salary cap.

This year it was Preston Smith.

Smith's successful run in Green Bay ended Tuesday when the Packers traded him at the deadline to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2025 seventh-round draft pick.

Smith, a defensive end, was a major contributor to the Packers' defense during his tenure and leaves with 44 sacks – the sixth-most in team history. But his playing time decreased in 2024 and now the Packers are getting younger at the position. Before the Packers signed kicker Brandon McManus last month, Smith was the oldest player on the roster at 31.

Smith's trade mirrors the Packers' 2023 trade of Rasul Douglas to the Buffalo Bills for a 2024 third-round draft pick.

Packers fans responded to the trade by appreciating Smith for his time in Green Bay, while some were also confused about the return.
