New Orleans Democratic Congressman Troy Carter wins re-election

New Orleans Democratic Congressman Troy Carter was re-elected Tuesday in Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District.

With a majority of votes, Carter had reached 54%, followed by Republican Christy Lynch in second place with 18%.

“Today, the people of the 2nd Congressional District have once again entrusted me with the great honor of serving as their voice in Washington,” Carter said in a text to USA Today Network. “This victory is a testament to our shared resolve and commitment” to secure resources and opportunities for our communities, advance environmental justice, protect civil rights and build a government that ensures justice for all.

“I am deeply grateful for this renewed mandate and look forward to continuing our work together to achieve a better, more equitable future for every resident of our district.”

Carter was Louisiana's only Democrat in Congress, but that is likely to change after the Legislature created the new black-majority 6th Congressional District that favors Democrats.

As a member of the House Transportation Committee, Carter was among those who crafted the final version of the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill in the House.

He also serves as the senior member for emergency management and technology in Homeland Security.
