Fox News Decision Desk expects the GOP to retake the Senate majority, a devastating blow to Democrats

The Fox News Decision Desk predicted that Republicans will retake control of the Senate in 2025 after the swearing in of the 119th Congress.

The GOP has officially won enough Senate seats in the 2024 elections to take the majority back from Democrats. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has led the upper chamber since 2021.

Republicans had a much more favorable ticket than Democrats in terms of which Senate seats were up for election this cycle.

The Republicans up for re-election were all in relatively safe states, and the party was all but guaranteed a win in West Virginia to replace outgoing Sen. Joe Manchin, IW.Va. With a West Virginia victory and the retention of all incumbents running for re-election, the GOP would already have 50 members.

Democrats were in a much more difficult position, as they were expected to lose Manchin's seat and face a tough fight for outgoing independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema's Senate seat in Arizona.

At the same time, several incredibly vulnerable Senate Democrats happened to be up for re-election this cycle, including Jon Tester of Montana and Sherrod Brown of Ohio in red-voting states, as well as Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Jacky Rosen of Nevada. and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, in battleground presidential states.

As if that weren't enough, the seat of outgoing Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., was also at great risk of going into the red.

Democrats only had a 51-member majority over their Republican counterparts, who held a conference of 49 people.

The party could not afford to lose virtually any elections in the 2024 elections due to its many vulnerabilities.

What made it even more difficult for Democrats to retain the majority in the 2024 election was the sharp decline in split-ticket voting. In several states, races were very likely to be decided by the winner of the presidential contest because voters were expected to select a party and vote for the candidates in that column as the vote progressed.
