President Joe Biden is not too old to know what he has done.

No matter how dismal his age, he must know that he should have simply resigned after a good term.

The Democrats could then have chosen someone in the usual way through primaries.

Maybe Josh Shapiro, the governor of Pennsylvania, would have been a candidate.

Maybe it would have been Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan's governor. The result could actually have been the first woman president.

Whoever it was, he or she would have been the party's choice.

And the duly selected candidate might have done a better job calling Donald Trump a threat to democracy than Vice President Kamala Harris.

Kamala Harris and US President Joe Biden
Biden's refusal to concede in time for a contest gave Trump a sword and shield, a man who defied democracy in 2020 and could point out that his opponent was chosen without a vote.

The candidate would also have been obligated to defend everything Biden did and didn't do, particularly with regard to the southern border.

One thing Trump was right about was that Harris had become the Democratic nominee without a single vote.

Too much else of what Trump said was dangerously wrong.

But he's still going to the White House.

He will be our commander in chief again, and now he has the mantle back after talking about using the military to secure the southern border, quell protests at home and fight crime in our cities.

The troops he will command include three young soldiers who manned an information table outside the U.S. Army Force Recruiting Station in Times Square last week.

They wore American flags on the right shoulder of their combat fatigues and name tags on their chests. Ahmed said she was from Ethiopia. Yilmaz comes from Turkey. Stupuris comes from Lithuania.

Soldiers in Times Square
Three young soldiers seen in New York's Times Square – Ahmed of Ethiopia, Stupuris of Lithuania and Yilmaz of Turkey – will have a new commander in chief.

“The wonderful thing about the United States to me is that every nation, every culture, every single culture, every single race and the people are united here,” Stupuris said. “That I just love it. To me, that’s the beauty of the United States.”

He said he was 20 years old and enlisted on March 11, 2024. He finished high school and went to college, then decided to join the military.

Democratic presidential candidate, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, is hugged by U.S. President Joe Biden during a campaign rally at IBEW Local Union #5 on September 2, 2024 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Harris' defeat should not comfort Biden: his actions got us here.

“I admit it, I didn’t join first to serve the United States,” he said. “But after I get my uniform, after training, after meeting people who thank you for your service, I realize that I actually want to serve this country because it is so great.”

With bright eyes, he stood at the recruiting station where America celebrated its famous victory in World War II. He said he hoped to become a Green Beret and seemed like exactly the kind of person we want to defend.

But thanks to Biden, we will now have a commander in chief who is talking about sending troops against what he calls the enemy within. And Biden is 81.

That doesn't release him.
