How to prepare for winter driving conditions

COLORADO SPRINGS – Whether you're new to Colorado or a local, it's a good idea to brush up on your winter driving skills.

The Colorado State Patrol reports that most speed-related crashes in our state peak between November and March.

The police believe that these accidents were probably due to driving too fast for the conditions.

There are driving schools throughout Colorado Springs that will teach you how to drive in the snow. I spoke to a driving school instructor who shared her best practices with me.

Curtis Fowler visits Colorado. He says even if you're used to snowy road conditions, you should take it seriously.

“You're probably great at driving in the snow, but what if you're not and you're overtaking at normal speed and the snow it kicks up freaks them out,” he said.

“You have to slow down. You have to watch out for the other drivers. You have to be careful when the person behind you hits the brakes. Can she stop then? Will they continue to slide?”

To avoid becoming an accident statistic in the snow, Drive Right Academy owner Susan Gates recommends taking it slow.

“The biggest thing is… Don't panic, which is hard to say because your emotions will take over. But again, with your hands down, you will take your foot off the gas. You brake.” “You don't want to slam on the brakes as this will make the skid worse. You want to apply nice, even pressure to the brakes.”
