CAMARILLO, Calif. – Hundreds of residents have been forced to flee a rapidly spreading wildfire called the Mountain Fire in Ventura County that has already damaged several homes. AIR7's Chris Cristi estimated that from what he could see, 40 to 50 homes burned.

The out-of-control wildfire broke out around 9:30 a.m. near the 7900 block of Balcom Canyon Road and Bradley Road. Firefighters described the incident as a two-alarm fire that burned 250 acres but quickly exploded and is now extinguishing more than 10,000 acres.

The fire crossed Highway 118 and is now threatening the Camarillo Heights area.

At least three homes burned in Camarillo as the mountain fire spread across nearly 9,000 acres on Wednesday.

The burned homes were all on Valley Vista Drive. The roof of a house was engulfed in flames as fierce winds swirled around. A little later, the roof of the neighboring house also caught fire.

Directly across the street, another home was completely engulfed in flames, with only the frame of the home visible through the raging fire.

Mountain Fire has been mapped to more than 8,000 acres

Just before 2 p.m., Cal Fire updated the extent of the Mountain Fire to 8,882 acres after it burned for about four hours.

A press conference is scheduled for 4 p.m. to update incident commanders on the status of the fire and firefighting efforts. ABC7 will bring you the press conference live when it happens.

A mother and her daughter described the frightening experience of trying to save their animals as their home burned.

A mother and daughter described the frightening experience of trying to save their animals as their home burned in the Mountain Fire.

“We took half of our animals out right at the start and came back and she came through to get the rest of the animals out. My husband works for the Ventura County Fire Department, so they were up there trying to put out the fire,” the mother said.

Her daughter saw the roof of her house in flames.

“Our roof was pretty burned. I was in there getting our ducks and while I was there the pond caught fire while I was standing there trying to get them out,” the daughter described.

The couple said they plan to drive with their animals to their extended family home in Santa Paula.
