Alex Ovechkin jokingly announces his bid for the first Selke Trophy during Spencer Carbery's postgame speech: “I need it”

The Washington Capitals improved their record to 9-3-0 after defeating the Nashville Predators 3-2.

The decisive play was Alex Ovechkin's goal in the third period, which gave the Capitals a lead they never wanted to relinquish.

Dylan Strome assisted Ovi and scored his 200th career assist, while Ovechkin scored the 861st goal of his career.

After the game, however, Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery wanted to focus on another part of Ovechkin's game that he was more impressed with.

Transcript

Spencer Carbery: They gave us some problems, but we fought the hell out of it and found a way. Huge goal late. All in all a great job.

(Clap)

Spencer Carbery: Stromer, that was a damn shitty game. The assist on O's goal.

(More clapping)

Spencer Carbery: 200!

(More clapping, Strome shyly gives a thumbs up)

Spencer Carbery: Damn impressive. Oh, the goal, but those blocks at the end of the game.

(Ovi shakes his fist in celebration, then punches John Carlson.)

John Carlson: Selke, baby. Selke.

Alex Ovechkin: Selke, I need it.

The big blocks marked the second big defensive play Selkvechkin had in the last week. He also mounted his horse and broke up an odd-man rush on the backcheck against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

While I doubt he will add this trophy to his collection, this Herculean feat will be noticed by his teammates and is significant to a winning hockey team.
