Updates have been added at the end of the article.

The PlayStation Network is suffering from a global outage. Subscribers confirm that they will no longer be able to play online games or access the Company's website.

When attempting to access PSN, users may be greeted with error messages such as “Connection to server timed out” or “An error occurred.”

The PlayStation Network status page confirmed the outage and stated that it was affecting all services, including account management, gaming and social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store and PlayStation Direct.

“You may have difficulty launching games, apps, or network features. We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience,” says the gaming and social service status report.

The status page says the outage began around 8:41 p.m. ET and that work is underway to restore service.

Sony today fixed a bug that caused ads, game promos, and trailers to appear where custom game graphics would normally appear when selecting a game.

This outage is not believed to be related to this previous issue.

Update 9/30/24: Sony has updated the PlayStation Network status page to say that the PlayStation Direct issues have been resolved.

However, all other PlayStation Network services remain down and the backend servers continue to return the “HTTP 500 Internal Server Error” message. This type of error often occurs when a server is overloaded.

This is a developing story.
