Sabrina Carpenter Responds to Critics Criticizing Her Tour Outfits: 'Don't Come'

Sabrina Carpenter has an open message to the haters who disapprove of her Short and sweet Tour outfits.

In conversation with Time As one of her 2024 Time100 Next Artists, the 25-year-old artist urged her fashion critics to stay home if they're unhappy with her wardrobe choices.

“All I’ll say to that is don’t come to the show, and that’s fine,” she said in the article published Oct. 2.

The “Please Please Please” artist has showcased a number of flirty, feminine fashions on stage since her Short N' Sweet tour began on September 23rd. Since then, Carpenter has worn a Swarvoski crystal-encrusted two-piece by provocative French designer Ludovic de Saint Sernin, a shimmering bodice and matching suspenders, and a black lace catsuit by Patou for her sold-out crowds of young girls, reluctant boyfriends and even a few mothers.

While her wardrobe – styled and selected by Jared Ellner – is synonymous with her appeal and lusty ballads, some showgoers and viewers at home have expressed their distaste for the outfit choice. Still, Carpenter cuts through the noise by remembering how her idols — Madonna, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé — used fashion as a mechanism for confidence on stage.

“It's unfortunate that there was ever any reason for criticism because, frankly, the most terrible thing in the world is to go on stage in front of so many people and act like it's nothing,” noted Taste. -Singer. “If the only thing that helps you is the way you feel comfortable when you dress, then that's what you need to do.”

For Carpenter, all the negligees, feathers and ruffled chiffon gowns add to her current persona – they embody the femininity she has always valued. And while her previous concert performances – as seen on her “Emails I Can't Send” and “Eras Tour” shows – reflected a more playful, Bratz-like style, she's now tapping into a new sense of conviction with bolder, barely existing decisions.

She added: “If that means corsets and garter belts and fluffy gowns or whatever the fuck right now, then that's exactly what it means.”

Unlike her show appearances in the past, the former Disney Channel entertainer was able to showcase new variations of her tailored looks for “Short N' Sweet.” Tour. Carpenter's previous touring style was limited, as she was forced to go through only a few outfits, even if they were damaged or visibly worn in any way.

“It used to be like, good luck if your outfit has stains,” Carpenter explained.

The “Bad Chem” singer has been working with star stylist Jared Ellner for some time. The duo have collaborated on countless of Carpenter's red carpet looks and magazine covers — most notably her 2024 MTV VMAs ensemble, which enlivened Madonna's strapless, studded 1991 Oscar dress.
