Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick and had a hand in two other goals as Argentina beat Bolivia 6-0 in South America's 2026 World Cup qualifier in front of raucous fans at the Monumental de Nuñez Stadium on Tuesday.

It was the first time in Messi's international career that he scored multiple goals and assists in a single game, and the hat-trick was his tenth for Argentina – equaling Cristiano Ronaldo's record for hat-tricks with Portugal.

Making only his second international appearance since recovering at the Copa America in July, Messi capitalized on a mistake by defender Marcelo Suarez to score the opening goal in the 19th minute.

“We enjoyed this, we are happy to play here in Argentina,” said Messi, who again refused to say whether he will play at the next World Cup in 2026. “This could be one of the last (games ahead) for the Argentine audience).

Bolivia goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra made a couple of great saves to extend the hosts' lead, but was beaten in the 43rd minute when Lautaro Martinez scored from a quick cross from Messi.

Argentina made it 3-0 shortly before half-time, Messi setting up Julián Álvarez for the goal.

Argentina controlled the second half and substitute Thiago Almada scored a fourth goal in the 70th minute from a pass from Nahuel Molina, before Messi scored twice in the closing stages to cap a magnificent performance.

Argentina, winners of the Copa América, lead the table with 22 points, three points ahead of Colombia, which beat Chile earlier in the day.

Bolivia, aiming to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 30 years, remains in the race with 12 points.

The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada.
