Bruins and Captain Close to Contract Extension (Report)

BOSTON — Brad Marchand has had a slow start to this season, but the Bruins aren't worried about their captain's long-term prospects.

According to Elliotte Friedman of SportsNet in Canada, Marchand and the Bruins are close to a contract extension.

According to Friedman on SportsNet's “Headlines”:

“The word is that the Bruins and Marchand are getting closer to an extension that is expected to last three years. We’ll see what happens in the next moment, but it means they’re getting closer.”

If the term is correct, it would mark Marchand's 40th birthday and the end of his career.

The report came just before the Bruins beat Toronto in overtime.

Before the season, Sweeney admitted that discussions had begun with Marchand.

Marchand, who underwent offseason surgery, said he did not plan to speak publicly about his desire for an extension or the status of any negotiations.

“I will never talk about contract issues in the media,” Marchand said after captains’ practice Tuesday at Warrior Arena. “Whatever happens will remain between Sweens and our team. There is enough respect between the two sides to get by.”
