Casagrande: Auburn had a stomach ache, but Hunter ate to stop the skid

This is an opinion column.

Hugh Freeze is a prophet.

Looking like a man who has been ill for the past few days, his interview with the SEC Network after the first quarter of Saturday night's game was harsh.

His team trailed by 10 yards and gained exactly 38 yards in the first 14 snaps. When it was TV time, they were facing their sixth straight SEC loss at Kentucky.

“We need to run the ball a little bit,” said Freeze, who was reportedly struggling with symptoms similar to food poisoning. “We tried to come out throwing. We don't protect very well. We have to keep the balance, but we have to establish the run.”

And they did.

Genius.

From that point on, the Tigers exorcised some demons and steamrolled Kentucky by…running the ball. A 24-10 win by Auburn ended its losing streak against SEC teams, five to seven against power conference teams in a display of brute force.

His name is Jarquez Hunter, the cure for years of stomach aches.

Auburn (3-5, 1-4 SEC) decided to use its star running back and set career highs in rushing attempts (23) and yards (278). His previous best was 183 yards last year at Pre-Pavia Vanderbilt.
