MLB World Series 2024: Yankees 2-4 Dodgers – score one game from the title

The Los Angeles Dodgers are one win away from winning their second World Series in five years after a 4-2 win over the New York Yankees in the Bronx gave them a 3-0 lead in the best-of Seven series provided.

There was little home comfort at Yankee Stadium, as the Dodgers once again proved superior at the plate and on the mound, taking an early lead that they never relinquished.

With the Yankees trailing 4-0 and getting their last hit in the bottom of the ninth inning, Alex Verdugo's two-run home run threatened an incredible comeback – but it was too little, too late.

The Dodgers had sprinted out of the gate with a 2-0 lead early in the first when Shohei Ohtani, who had suffered a shoulder injury in Game 2, drew a leadoff walk and Freddie Freeman hit his third home run of the World Series.

And after Mookie Betts brought in Tommy Edman to make it 3-0, Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt was ejected before the bottom of the third inning.

The hosts stayed in the contest by stranding five Dodgers baserunners over the next two innings, finally getting their first hit on a double by Giancarlo Stanton in the fourth.

But a great throw from Teoscar Hernandez in left field brought Stanton to the plate when it looked like he was going to score on a line drive from Anthony Volpe.

The Dodgers, bolstered by five scoreless innings from starter Walker Buehler, added another run in the sixth when Gavin Lux was hit by a pitch, stole second base and was hit by Enrique Hernandez.

And just like the first two games in California, the Yankees continued to struggle until Verdugo's late try, with star batter Aaron Judge once again going hitless.

The series continues again at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, with the hosts needing to win to avoid a humiliating 4-0 defeat.

No team has ever overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a World Series. In fact, only once has a team gone 3-0 and won a seven-game MLB playoff series, when the Boston Red Sox defeated the Yankees 4-3 in the 2004 American League Championship Series.
