A High Wind Warning has been issued for Monday in Whatcom, Skagit County

If October's excessive rain and early darkness today weren't enough, strong winds are heading our way now.

According to the National Weather Service, a high wind advisory has been issued for Whatcom and Skagit counties, with winds of 40 to 55 mph expected between 4 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday, November 4th.

According to the NWS, southwesterly winds will transition to westerly across the region late Monday, with the strongest winds moving through the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

The NWS expects the gusts could lead to “widespread power outages and road closures due to downed trees and power lines.”

To prepare for strong winds, NWS advises people to avoid downed power lines, stay away from trees, maintain a safe distance when driving, charge phones and keep flashlights handy.

A winter storm warning is also in effect from 4 a.m. Monday through 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Central Cascades above 3,500 feet, where snow amounts could exceed 1 inch per hour and wind gusts between 30 and 45 mph.

NWS expects travel over the higher passes will be “difficult to impossible” as visibility can drop below 1/4 mile and recommends bringing tire chains, blankets and other items in case travelers who absolutely traveling, being stuck.
