Adam Schefter talks about Mike McCarthy's future and problems with the Dallas Cowboys after a 1-2 start

Adam Schefter tied together The Pat McAfee Show on Monday to discuss the future of the Dallas Cowboys head coach Michael McCarthy after the franchise's disappointing 1-2 start, which includes two consecutive home losses in the last two weeks.

The noise in and out of Dallas is growing as the Cowboys went from being considered Super Bowl contenders after Week 1 to many wondering how far they can fall after losing to the New Orleans Saints in Week 2 and losing to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3. The NFL is a week-to-week league, but Schefter doesn't foresee any major changes at the moment.

“Jerry is always very patient,” Schefter began, referring to McCarthy. “Even though it gets very loud, what are they going to do during the season? So what are they going to do now? What are they going to do? … He has the highest winning percentage in Cowboys franchise history. He's won 12 games every year for the last three years. You want to get rid of this guy? By the way, he's in the last year of his contract. I don't think that's the solution.

“I come back to the question: What do you want them to do? You asked Jerry Jones why you didn't sign Derrick Henry? He said they couldn't afford him. You know, Derrick Henry has the same agent as Daniel Prescott… I think you could find a way, Dak's agent would want Derrick Henry in Dallas if that could be arranged, but they couldn't get it done, they couldn't get it done.

“They've paid other people. They're paying Trey Lance $5 million guaranteed this year. … You can't afford everything and every team makes its own decisions. If you want a player bad enough, you'll find a way to make it happen.”

It's true that McCarthy was a great signing for the Cowboys, even if he wasn't as successful in the playoffs with Dallas. Still, they were a great team in the regular season and Prescott has developed into an MVP-caliber quarterback under his leadership.

However, there was an uneven offseason in which Dallas waited until the day of the first game to give Prescott a long-term contract extension, in addition to a “will they or won’t they” debate with CeeDee LambThe Cowboys are not in a particularly good mood ahead of Week 4. A loss to the suddenly so competent New York Giants would make the calls for McCarthy's job even louder.

While Adam Schefter doesn't expect anything to happen to Mike McCarthy right now, that could change in the next few weeks. One thing is for sure: Dallas needs to get its act together, and fast, before the Cowboys' season gets out of hand.
