Americans will receive additional Social Security payments in November

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive two payments in November because the usual payment date for December benefits falls on a weekend.

SSI benefits are paid to people age 65 with little or no income, or to people under 65 with a physical or mental disability. The payment is usually made on the first of the month if you do not also receive pension benefits. About 7.5 million people get SSI each month, and the maximum individual benefit is $943.

SSI beneficiaries will receive their November payment as usual on Friday, November 1, and then a December payment on Friday, November 29, normally administered on the first of the corresponding month. This is because December 1st falls on a Sunday and Social Security payments are not made on weekends or holidays.

“We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and to ensure that you do not have to wait past the first of the month to receive your payment,” the Social Security Administration (SSA) explained in a 2022 blog post .

“This does not mean that you received a double payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment.”

All other Social Security payments for retirees under the regular Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance (OASDI) program will be paid throughout December. If you do not receive your payment on the scheduled date, the SSA recommends waiting an additional three shipping days before contacting you.

There will also be some changes in the payment schedule in December due to the Christmas and New Year holidays. Old age pension claimants whose birthday is between the 21st and 31st of a month of the year will receive their payment one day earlier than usual on Tuesday 24th December, as the usual payment date is Christmas Day.

Since January 1st is a holiday, SSI recipients will receive their salary a little earlier on December 31st.

All beneficiaries will receive an increase in their benefits in December or January due to the recently announced cost of living adjustment (COLA), which increases benefits annually to keep pace with inflation.

On October 10, the SSA announced a 2.5 percent increase in all benefits administered by the government agency. “Social Security benefits and SSI payments will increase in 2025, helping tens of millions of people keep up with their spending even as inflation begins to subside,” Social Security Commissioner Martin O'Malley said in the announcement.

The first adjusted payments will occur in January 2025 for retirement benefits and December 2024 for SSI recipients.
