Andrew Garfield teaches Elmo how to deal with grief five years after the loss of his mother

Andrew Garfield shared a very personal moment with Elmo on Friday, helping to teach Sesame Street's younger viewers how to deal with big feelings.

The We Live In Time actor joined the red Muppet for an X-video with the caption, “Elmo is here to listen.” Elmo loves you, Mr. Andrew Garfield!” In the clip, Elmo checks in on Garfield, who reveals that he is grieving the loss of his mother, Lynn, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2019.

“I'm just thinking about my mother today. She passed away not long ago and I just miss her so much,” he says, to which Elmo expresses his sadness. “You don’t have to apologize. It's actually totally okay to miss someone…that sadness is a kind of gift. In a way, it's a beautiful thing to feel. Because it means you really loved someone when you miss them.”

“When I miss my mother, I remember all the cuddles I got from her, all the hugs I got from her. It makes me feel close to her when I miss her, so I'm happy to have all the memories of my mother and the joy she gave me and the joy she gave my brother and my father and everyone she has ever met,” Garfield continues. “When I miss her, I remember that she made me so happy. So I can celebrate her and miss her at the same time.”

Elmo ends the video by hugging Garfield and assuring viewers that he will keep both Lynn and all of their loved ones in his heart. The actor also lets the “Sesame Street” star know that “Elmo is my mom's favorite.” Watch the sweet video above.

“Sesame Street” is available to stream on Max.
