Chicago Sky star Angel Reese is “heartbroken” after her team reportedly fired head coach Teresa Weatherspoon on Thursday.

Annie Costabile from the Chicago Sun Times reported that Sky had fired Weatherspoon after just one season, and Reese responded with a heartfelt message that said, among other things, that the coach was “the only person who believed in me” and “the one who trusted me.”

She also said her relationship with Weatherspoon “will last forever.”

I am heartbroken. I am literally at a loss for words knowing what this woman meant to me at such a pivotal point in my life. She was the only person who believed in me. The one who trusted me. Many don't even know what it's like to be a black woman in sports when no one believes in it…

This was a pretty shocking development as Chicago was clearly in rebuilding mode at the start of the season.

The star-studded squads that won a championship in 2021 and went 26-10 in 2022 with Candace Parker, Kahleah Copper, Courtney Vandersloot, Allie Quigley and others are no longer in the Windy City, and the 18-22 mark Last season was the beginning of what seemed like a longer process.

It became even clearer that the Sky would be in a rebuild when they traded Copper to Phoenix Mercury ahead of the 2024 season.

Part of that rebuild included adding quality rookies, and that's exactly what the team did, selecting South Carolina's Kamilla Cardoso at No. 3 overall and LSU's Reese at No. 7 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft. As is often the case with rookies, there were growing pains, as the team learned under Weatherspoon.

Still, Chicago was a threat to the playoffs until another veteran, Marina Mabrey, moved to the Connecticut Sun in a midseason move.

In the last 14 games it was 2:12, as injuries also played a role. Reese himself missed the final six games of the season due to a wrist injury that required surgery.

The Sky finished 13-27 for the final playoff spot, two games behind the eighth-seeded Atlanta Dream. There have been some signs of progress, and the team will likely take another step in the future as Reese and Cardoso become more experienced.

But it was unrealistic to expect Weatherspoon to win at a high level in her first season as head coach, given the reality of the rebuild and some aspects of the overall squad construction. Chicago is preparing for the future, but continuity will be less in that future as the organization is now looking for a new head coach for the 2025 season.

And the face of the franchise was not happy with the move.
