A cold front is forecast to spread across much of the central and eastern U.S. this week, likely bringing the first frost of the fall season in some areas as temperatures drop in Florida and Texas gets relief from record-breaking heat.

Freeze and winter storm warnings were in effect Monday across the Plains and Midwest regions as forecasters predicted subfreezing temperatures in several states, including the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois and Michigan.

According to the National Weather Service, the high pressure system in the Northeast will bring rain and snow showers across the Adirondacks, central Appalachia and northern New England. Federal meteorologists say snowfall is most likely at higher elevations in northern New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

According to the Weather Prediction Center, daytime high temperatures will drop to 50 to 60 degrees across the central and eastern U.S., including in Washington, New York City and Boston. Widespread low temperatures will dip below average for this time of year, reaching the 30s in many parts of the eastern U.S., which may lead to the threat of frost.

Daytime high temperatures in north and central Florida are expected to fall from the high 80s to the high 60s and 70s by Wednesday, bringing relief to the state as hundreds of thousands remain without power after Hurricane Milton ripped through the peninsula last week. By the weekend, afternoon highs will return to the 80s.

In Texas, the cold front will ease a stretch of oppressive heat. The weather service says the state will see summer-like temperatures into the mid-90s on Monday and Tuesday, which could break some daily high temperature records, including for cities like Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Corpus Christi.

The state has experienced record-breaking heat in recent days. On Sunday, the afternoon high temperature at Camp Mabry in Austin reached 101 degrees, the warmest October temperature ever at that location, the weather service said. Del Rio, on the border, reached 99 degrees, breaking a 114-year-old record. On Thursday, El Paso reached an afternoon high of 93 degrees, breaking the record of 91 degrees set in 2020.

As the cold front reaches Texas on Wednesday, daytime high temperatures will drop to the high 60s and 70s before slowly rising over the weekend, according to the Weather Prediction Center.

In the West, cooler air will ease a heat wave this week. Widespread daily high temperatures in the 80s and high 70s – in Oregon, California, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and Nevada – will fall into the 40s and 50s toward the end of the week.
