Arizona's 2024 election: What we know now

The only thing politicians knew for certain on election night was that it would be close.

From state elections to the White House, Arizona's purple state status is in full effect. Not like Arizona sometimes turns blue and sometimes turns red. Although that is still a possibility. But because the state is almost split down the middle.

From Tuesday to Wednesday, the presidential election was less than a percentage point apart, and once again Arizona is the closest state in the country for now. Republicans also wiped out the slim Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate, but in Arizona, Democrat Ruben Gallego appeared to be on his way to victory.

Fox News has already called Donald Trump's presidential race. In Arizona, Democrats did quite well, at least in the unofficial results released Tuesday evening. They could win important elections in the legislature and pick up two seats in Congress.

And the vote count is slow, but Election Day went relatively smoothly. With more ballots still to be counted and the mandatory hand count still pending Saturday, most of Arizona's political future is still up in the air.

This week on The Gaggle, a politics podcast from The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, hosts Ron Hansen and Mary Jo Pitzl join political reporters from The Republic to break down what happened on Election Night 2024.
