Artemi Panarin has the eighth hat trick of his career, the Rangers beat the Red Wings

DETROIT – Artemi Panarin had his eighth career hat trick and the New York Rangers earned a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.

Panarin became the first Rangers player to score multiple points in the first four games of a season. He scored two goals on the power play. Vincent Trocheck also scored a power play goal and assisted on all of Panarin's goals.

Jonathan Quick made 29 saves in his season debut. Victor Mancini also scored.

The Rangers have won the last five meetings, including twice this week. New York celebrated a 4-1 home win over Detroit on Monday evening.

Moritz Seider and JT Compher scored for Detroit. Red Wings goaltender Cam Talbot was taken off the field in the second period after allowing five goals.

Takeaways

Ranger: The power play ranked third in the league last season, with four players scoring at least 11 goals, including Panarin and Trocheck. Things look just as dangerous this season with Panarin taking the lead with three goals on the man advantage.

Red wings: Detroit narrowly missed the playoffs last season, largely because it ranked 25th in goals allowed (3.33). The Red Wings got off to a 1-3 start and conceded 15 goals.

Key moment

The Red Wings had a 5-on-3 lead after the Rangers committed two penalties in the first six minutes. Detroit, which scored just one power-play goal in 13 attempts this season, failed to cash in. Just over a minute after the Rangers' penalty shootout, Panarin scored on New York's first shot on goal.

Key statistics

Panarin has 39 points, including 15 goals, in 24 career games against the Red Wings. He has scored at least one point in 10 of the last 11 meetings.
