“SNL” returned to the air with the second episode of its 50th season on October 5, with comedian Nate Bargatze as host and British band Coldplay as musical guest.

Bargatze made his debut as a host in 2023 in one of the best episodes of season 49. The stand-up comedian's affable energy was well received by audiences and produced some of the best sketches in recent memory. At the top of the list was “George Washington's Dream,” in which the future president (Bargatze) explains to his fellow colonists his vision for America – a country with nonsensical units of measurement, a hand-played sport called football, and other American curiosities.

Given the sketch's success, it was no surprise that Bargatze's return as host gave viewers a sequel to “George Washington,” in which the first commander in chief explained why hamburgers don't have ham, why cow is called beef but chicken is just chicken, and more inexplicable Americanisms.

Just like the Season 50 premiere, this week's cold open featured guest appearances from a quartet of comedians: Maya Rudolph reprized her role as Vice President Kamala Harris, Andy Samberg played second gentleman Doug Emhoff, and Dana Carvey starred as President Joe Biden Trio Watching Tim Walz (Jim Gaffigan) debate JD Vance (Bowen Yang) on TV.

With Samberg back for another week, the October 5 episode also featured one of the former cast member's signature digital shorts. True to form, Samberg and his Lonely Island colleague Akiva Schaffer mixed the absurd and the profane and introduced a group of investors to an on-demand omakase called Sushi Glory Hole.
