“Breaking: Steelers trade for Jets WR Mike Williams.”

“Breaking: Steelers trade for Jets WR Mike Williams.”

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Pittsburgh Steelers have finally landed a wide receiver in a trade for New York Jets WR Mike Williams. After weeks of speculation following the Jets' acquisition of WR Davante Adams, Williams is now ready is shipped to Pittsburgh where he will have the opportunity to improve the Steelers passing game.

The Steelers are giving up a 2025 fifth-round pick for Williams, according to Schefter.

The 30-year-old Williams was frozen in New York as the No. 4 receiver behind Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard and Adams. Even before the Adams deal, Williams had caught just 10 passes for 145 yards and zero touchdowns in the Jets' first six games. He was called out for mental errors, including QB Aaron Rodgers telling reporters that Williams took the wrong route, which led to an interception at the end of the game against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6.

Pittsburgh's interest in Williams dates back to the offseason. After he tore his ACL in 2023, the Steelers scheduled a visit with him in March. But first the Jets had their meeting and Williams didn't leave the building, signing a one-year, $10 million contract.

Following the Adams deal, multiple reports suggested that the Steelers were still interested, along with the Los Angeles Chargers, Williams' former team and the New Orleans Saints. Pittsburgh and New York held trade talks until they faced off in Week 7.

After Lazard suffered a pectoral injury that sent him to IR and the Jets beat the Houston Texans, it appeared Williams might remain with New York. Instead, he's off to help Pittsburgh in the playoffs. In Lazard's absence in Week 9, Williams caught one pass for six yards on two scores.

Mike Williams' contract will be cheap and easy for the Steelers to acquire. Weighing in at 6,036 and weighing 218 pounds, he will be a big and potential downfield target for QB Russell Wilson, catering to his penchant for vertical throws. According to Schefter, the Steelers will cover the remainder of Williams' salary.

Over his career, Williams has caught 319 passes for 4,951 yards and 31 touchdowns. He posted two 1,000-yard seasons, 2019 and 2021, but has seen a decline in performance in recent years. Injuries have contributed to this decline.

As OTC's Nick Korte notes, the Steelers have two fifth-round picks. It's not clear what they're sending to the Jets.

Now we'll see how quickly Williams gets up to speed and becomes the No. 2 receiver in this offense. Pittsburgh could still rotate receivers while Williams gets used to it. He's not the slam dunk star or starter the Steelers were looking for, but he's an improvement over who Pittsburgh started the season with.
