Breeze Airways announces second destination from Ogdensburg, residents are happy about the option

OGDENSBURG, New York (WWNY) – When Morristown residents David and Laurie Demers heard there was a new flight from Ogdensburg International Airport to Orlando, Florida, they headed straight to the airport.

“We didn't even plan this, we didn't even talk about it. We just said, 'Okay, let's go!'” Laurie Demers said.

The couple took direct flights from Ogdensburg to Orlando when Allegiant Airlines was still the airline.

Now Breeze Airline, which serves Ogdensburg International Airport, is offering a new route just days after setting up shop in Maple City.

Breeze Airways departed Ogdensburg on Friday with a daily flight to Washington, DC

The couple wasted no time in getting one-way tickets for less than $100 each.

Charlie Garrelts, manager of Ogdensburg International Airport, believes the addition of the route could lead to more travelers like the Demers wanting to travel south in the winter.

“Everyone knows it gets cold up in the North Country in February, and I think it will be a great getaway, or winter vacation, down in Orlando, Florida,” Garrelts said.

Many customers using the airport will come from Canada, which could mean more traffic and revenue for the Ogdensburg International Bridge.

“They use our airport quite a bit and we really appreciate that and will definitely see an increase in Canadian traffic,” Garrelts said.

Garrelts also hopes the additional flights could bring more people to the city of Ogdensburg to eat, sleep and refuel.

Ogdensburg International Airport is looking forward to its inaugural flight to Orlando in February. Flights to Orlando will operate on Thursdays and Sundays starting February 13th.

Meanwhile, Senator Charles Schumer shared his enthusiasm.

“New Breeze flights to Orlando will land at Ogdensburg International Airport starting next February!” said New York Senator Chuck Schumer. “Following the inaugural flight from Ogdensburg to D.C. last weekend, these new connections to sunny Orlando will help boost the North Country economy even further and provide our families with more destinations in warmer climates during the cold winter months. “

The U.S. Department of Transportation chose Breeze for Ogdensburg on the recommendation of the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority, which owns the airport. It is part of the federal government's Essential Air Service program, which subsidizes airlines flying from rural airports.

Breeze replaces Contour Airlines, which flew from Ogdensburg to Philadelphia.
