Incumbent state Rep. Brooke Boden and Democratic challenger Spencer Waugh are facing off in the Iowa House of Representatives District 21 election.

This is the 51-year-old's third time running to fill the seat, which covers parts of Warren and Marion counties, including Indianola, Milo, Lacona and Knoxville. Boden and Waugh ran unopposed in their respective primaries in June.

Twice elected soil, Indianola, is a self-employed small business owner. Her political experience and civic activities include previously serving as co-chair of the Warren County Republican Central Committee. She is also a member of the Elks Lodge and an active member of her church.

Political newcomer Waugh, 49, of Indianola, is an educator at Simpson College. His political experience and civic activities include being a national champion debate coach and he is actively involved in the Iowa High School Speech Association, the Lutheran Church of Hope and the local host steering committee for the 2024 National Speech & Debate Tournament.

Education would be Waugh's top priority if elected, according to a Des Moines Register election questionnaire.

Boden's top priority if re-elected would be to “keep costs down, prevent reckless spending and combat inflation,” her questionnaire said.
