Claudia Sheinbaum will take office as Mexico's first female president on Tuesday, October 1st. The 62-year-old is also the first of Jewish descent.

Before her election, the Mexican president was sworn into office on December 1st – about five months after the presidential election.

She is a representative of the ruling Morena party and will succeed Andres Manuel López Obrador, who won the presidency on his third attempt in 2018.

Sheinbaum will serve a six-year term ending in 2030.

Sheinbaum ceremoniously sworn in

The ceremony will take place as part of a general session of Congress at the Legislative Palace of San Lázaro in Mexico City. It is scheduled to begin around 9 a.m. in the lower house of Congress, the Chamber of Deputies.

It is a beautiful ceremony showcasing the Mexican flag, sash and presidential coat of arms. At the end, Mexican participants and foreign guests will stand for the performance of the Mexican national anthem.

Sheinbaum and others are expected to speak at a ceremony that could last several hours.

Mexico's presidential sash

President López Obrador is expected to attend the inauguration ceremony. Like everyone before him, he will wear the red, green and white presidential sash, which will be the last time he wears it.

López Obrador will hand over the sash to Ifigenia Martha Martínez y Hernández, president of the policy committee of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies and deputy of the Morena party.

Martínez will then present Sheinbaum with the sash, an important symbol of the power and responsibility of the Mexican president.

Presidential sashes are common in many countries, particularly in Latin America.
