Colts Monday Morning Awards: Week 3 vs. Bears

Colts Monday Morning Awards: Week 3 vs. Bears

MVP of the game: Jonathan Taylor / Jaylon Jones

With Richardson struggling with his inexperience, the offense relies heavily on Taylor to both score points and move the ball consistently, as the running back was once again by far the most productive offensive player, making 24 touches for 135 yards and two touchdowns. JT looks like the running back the Colts envisioned when they extended him, and given the offensive line's good blocking performance, he seems primed for a great season. Jaylon Jones struggled in the first two games, but had a great performance yesterday, recording two interceptions and five tackles, with the two gains coming at key moments in the game.

Failure of the game: Anthony Richardson

There's no hiding the fact that Anthony Richardson has been bad the last two weeks. He misses the easy passes, he doesn't read them properly, he loses the ball, and he isn't used as a runner often, so his production is severely limited. Given his inexperience, games like this are understandable, but still concerning, as he looks much worse than he did last season. I feel obligated to clarify that I'm not over Richardson, and by no means calling for him to be replaced or anything like that, but this last game is one that Steichen and Co. probably won't want to repeat from their quarterback anytime soon.

Play of the game: Taylor's 29-yard touchdown run

Explosive run by Taylor to open the scoring and bring some balance to the Colts offense. These types of plays by Taylor will help create space for the passing game and hopefully prevent the opposing offense from playing with two safeties high and limiting the long ball, which seems to be the only pass Richardson can hit right now.

Worst play of the game: Richardson's interception in the red zone

Oops, this play brought back some Carson Wentz flashbacks as Richardson tried too hard and his pass deflected off the line of scrimmage and was intercepted in the end zone. In such a low-scoring game, dropping three points was a big blow.

Best position group: Defensive Line

I understand they were playing against an offensive line featuring Colts legend Matt Pryor, but the defensive line was still great, collecting 4 sacks and finally delivering a solid running game, allowing the Bears running backs only 59 yards on 25 carries. It's important to remember that the Colts defensive line is also missing their two best players in Samson Ebukam and DeForest Buckner.

Rookie of the week: Laiatu Latu

Latu recorded his first sack in the NFL and it was long overdue, as his six pressures in just 57 pass rushing snaps make him by far the team's most productive edge rusher. His sack also led to the defense recovering a fumble at the perfect time and the Colts being able to end the game. A crucial play that was worth a win for the rookie.

Unsung hero: Nick Cross

Cross returned to double-digit tackles and quietly established himself as the Colts' starting safety. He proved to be a good player at perhaps the team's weakest position. His athleticism and sure tackling make him a great asset against the run, and even though Odunze had a big catch against him, he's always there to pass.
