Connecticut Sun faces Indiana Fever in first playoff game – NBC Connecticut

Connecticut will be the focus of the basketball world when the Connecticut Sun face the Indiana Fever at home on Sunday in the first round of the WNBA playoffs. It's a best-of-three series.

And the start of the playoffs looks like the start of the season.

Caitlin Clark made her WNBA debut here in Connecticut as the Sun and Fever faced off on the court at Mohegan Sun.

The arena was packed with Sun fans and the many who had traveled to Connecticut to attend Clark's first game in person.

The Sun won the game 92-71.

Last season, Clark set the NCAA record for most points ever as a college player at Iowa, and she was instrumental in drawing a record 18.9 million viewers to the national championship game, which her Hawkeyes lost to undefeated South Carolina.

And her WNBA debut in May set a viewership record for ESPN when more than 2 million viewers tuned in, breaking ESPN's previous record of nearly 1.5 million viewers for a Phoenix Mercury game against the Connecticut Sun on May 22, 2004, in Diana Taurasi's rookie season.

And Clark has had a great season. In August, she set a new WNBA rookie three-point record and the huge crowds at her games made headlines.

Caitlin Clark has left a lasting legacy in women's college basketball, but how will she make the transition and make an impact at the next level when she enters the WNBA? Khristina Williams, founder of Girls Talk Sports TV, and Sophie Cunningham, defenseman for the Phoenix Mercury, share their thoughts.

All eyes will be on Clark, who is making her postseason debut. The Fever struggled with a difficult schedule to start the season but have hit their stride following the Olympic break.

Clark is undoubtedly a star, and the Sun are a force on the pitch as well.

Connecticut has made eight consecutive postseason appearances, the longest active streak.

The Sun (28-12) defeated the Chicago Sky 87-54 on Thursday night, setting a new franchise record for most wins in a single regular season and entering the playoffs as the No. 3 seed.

The Fever lost 91-92 to the Washington Mystics on Thursday night to finish the season at 20-20. This is the first time the No. 6 seed Fever have made the playoffs since 2016.

Season series: The Sun won three of the four meetings, but the Fever won the last one. Connecticut's three victories all came within the first month of the season.

Important storylines: Clark has always shone on the biggest stage and is ready for her playoff debut. For the Fever to succeed, they need other players to help her. Clark averaged 16.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in the four games. The Sun are looking to make the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2022.

The Sun will face the Fever on Sunday, September 22nd at 3 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena.
