The MIAA state tournaments for field hockey and girls volleyball scheduled for Tuesday have been delayed at least a day due to a court order from the Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District.

Masslive.com reported that the injunction “is the result of an agreement between the MIAA and the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Association after several PVIAC schools failed to correctly enter their schedules. Schools were required to have full timetables – including “TBA” (to). (to be announced) Games for Western Mass. Tournament – on their schedule through September 13th.

Minutes before announcing the girls volleyball competitions Tuesday morning, the MIAA issued the following statement:

“It is always our intention to communicate and publish state tournament standings in a timely manner. We are writing to inform you that the state tournament schedules for 11:00 a.m. (field hockey) and 1:00 p.m. (volleyball) will be delayed.

“Yesterday afternoon (October 28, 2024), the MIAA received notice of an injunction filed by the Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District and individual student plaintiffs.

“The resolution was passed without the MIAA having an opportunity to be heard. We therefore requested and received the opportunity to be heard by the judge.

“The order as currently written will impact the seeding process and the clear and accurate publication of state tournament standings and will affect seedings for multiple teams in multiple divisions in both sports. We have repeatedly stated that we will work for the whole and not the one.

“The school district in question has admitted on numerous occasions that it did not comply with MIAA protocols. It is false that these potential impacts would negatively impact the vast majority of member schools across the state that have followed the required process. For this reason, we are seeking further resolution to this matter.

“Rest assured that the brackets will be released as soon as this matter is resolved. Our goal is to release the brackets for field hockey and volleyball on Wednesday (October 30). We will provide you with an update on Wednesday morning. The integrity, clarity and accuracy of our brackets must prevail at this time.
