From the mouths of children

Mike Jackson's daughter, Ryann, is only three years old. She hears something and tries to incorporate it into her vocabulary, often rephrasing it in ways only three-year-olds can. When Jackson called his children before the Panthers' game against the Raiders on Sunday, his daughter repeated something her father said was from a TikTok she'd seen, twisting it to fit her toddler language.

However, her revision of the sentence was exactly what Jackson needed to hear.

“Dad, let’s get this money today,” Ryann said to her father.

Jackson, who told the story on Monday, said he and the other people on the call were stunned because it was the first time they had heard her say such a witty line.

“She never says that,” Jackson said. “When she said that, I thought, 'Yeah, I know I'm getting a pick.'”

And he was right, he went out and intercepted his first ball since 2022 and only the second of his career. He kept the ball, and it goes right to Ryann.

“It’s a gift for my daughter,” Jackson said.

The interception and subsequent gift were highlights for Jackson on Sunday, but his overall game is worth rewatching. The corner finished the game with nine tackles, the most on his team, showing his willingness to jump into the run game and his ability to read plays before the snap to prevent catchers from gaining extra yards (in addition to his three passes defended). But even the nine tackles weren't enough for the corner traded for Dan Morgan during training camp.

“So my goal is to make at least 10 tackles every game because I know I can do it,” Jackson said. “I was one short and I missed the tackle. That's the frustrating part. If I would have made the tackle, I would have 10.”

While Jackson can still reach double-digit tackles, he and fellow cornerback Jaycee Horn and nickelback Troy Hill were able to leave Vegas knowing they had accomplished at least one of their most important goals: keeping Davante Adams in check.

Adams caught nine balls for four receptions for 40 yards. He was also the target of Jackson's interception. As defensive backs coach Deangelo Hall told his DBs during the week, Adams “has a gold jacket waiting for him. Like he's making his plays.” So in preparation, he challenged the group to simply show a willingness to compete with them.

“We didn't bow down when he made his catches, like he was making his plays, but it was like we understood that,” Jackson said. “You just have to show that you're not afraid. You're not going to give in no matter what.”
