Derek Carr responds after Michael tells Thomas he should get an “ass whooping” for throwing to Chis Olave: “I don't really care.”

Derek Carr responded Sunday after former teammate Michael Thomas wrote on social media that the Saints quarterback should “kick his ass” for throwing to Chris Olave.

Olave was injured Sunday afternoon by an illegal hit by Carolina Panthers cornerback Xavier Woods. Olave was unable to reach a high throw from Carr in traffic, leaving him vulnerable to Panthers defenders.

The blow to Olave's head left him motionless on the field. He was diagnosed with a concussion and was transported to a hospital in Charlotte after being carted off the field on a backboard.

Olave was eventually released and allowed to fly back to New Orleans with the Saints. He sent a message on social media thanking fans for their support.

Further details about Olave's condition were not clear as of Sunday evening. Carolina won the game 23-22.

Immediately after the game, Thomas attacked Carr in a tirade on social media, insinuating that Carr's throw was responsible for Olave's injury. Thomas played with Carr in 2023 in Carr's first season with the Saints. He didn't hold back his contempt for his former quarterback.

Carr heard about Thomas' comments. He said in his post-match press conference that he had not read them and had no plans to do so. But he answered.

“I love Mike. And if he does that, of course I don’t care,” Carr said. “I’ve had so many teammates over the years, and he’s like the guy who couldn’t get along with me. And I don't know what I did to him. I don’t know why he thinks like that.”

I'm sorry that he feels like he has to do whatever he has to do. I don't know. But he never called me during that time. My phone number has never changed. I've actually called him on several occasions. Just to try. … It's unfortunate, especially from a player like that, but I wish him all the best. I hope he comes into a team wanting to do it and loving it.”

Carr then addressed criticism that his throwing left Olave vulnerable to injury.

“It’s just something I would never do to a teammate. It was a singles high. The ball went where we talked about it. And unfortunately Chris was hit in the head. That’s what happens in our game.”

“I would never do it on purpose. I didn't put him in a bad light. … When it comes to the football aspect, I really don't have an answer. But when it comes to it, it's all about the people part. I just hope he gets what he’s looking for.”

Thomas last played in the NFL with the Saints in 2023 and entered the offseason as a free agent. A three-time Pro Bowler, he remains a free agent at age 31 nine weeks into the NFL season.
