Flames 3-1 Blackhawks (Oct. 15, 2024) Game Recap

CALGARY, Alberta – Matt Coronato scored two goals, Dustin Wolf made 31 saves and the Calgary Flames remained undefeated with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night.

Andrei Kuzmenko also scored on his first power play of the season for Calgary, which improved to 4-0 and tied for the best start in franchise history. The Flames also started with four consecutive wins in the 2009-10 and 1993-94 seasons.

Nick Foligno scored a goal for Chicago and finished the season opener 1-2-1 over four games.

Petr Mrazek stopped 23 shots for Chicago.

Coronato's second goal was an empty-net goal with 39 seconds left in the game.

Takeaways

Blackhawks: The visitors had several chances to break a 1-1 tie as they outscored the hosts 7-1 early in the second period, but they couldn't break away from Wolf. He made a number of early stops, including one against Joey Anderson that was negated by a short-handed breakaway and a pad stop on Teuvo Teravainen's one-timer.

Flames: The fourth line continues to be a source of surprise attack. After Justin Kirkland, filling in for Kevin Rooney (upper body), scored his first NHL goal on Saturday, the 28-year-old received his first NHL assist on Coronato's first goal. Ryan Lomberg occupies the left side.

Key moment

After Connor Bedard caught Wolf under his mask with the tip of his stick after 11:56 seconds, he sat in the penalty area and Kuzmenko cleverly blocked Jonathan Huberdeau's point throw from the air. The goal came on a delayed penalty against Foligno in a 6-on-4 game.

Key statistics

With an assist on Kuzmenko's goal, Connor Zary has five points (2 goals, 3 assists) and is the only Calgary player with a point in all four games. With one assist, Rasmus Andersson has six points (2 goals, 4 assists), leading all NHL defensemen.
