Throughout its illustrious history, Texas football has been part of several matchups dubbed the “Game of the Century,” from its win over Arkansas in 1969 to its legendary win over top-ranked USC in the national championship game at the end of the 2005 season.

The Longhorns' game against Georgia on Saturday won't be quite like that, but it won't be too far off either.

The matchup between No. 1 Texas and No. 4 Georgia at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin is one of the most anticipated of the 2024 college football season, with the winner taking a decisive lead in the race for the SEC Championship and a coveted spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff.

Having already suffered a setback against Alabama, the Bulldogs have a much smaller margin for error moving forward. A loss to the Longhorns wouldn't necessarily knock them out of the playoffs, but it would make their path there much more dangerous.

It will be just the third top-five matchup in the 100-year history of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium and the first since 2006, when No. 2 Texas and freshman quarterback Colt McCoy played No. 1 24/7 Ohio State lost.

After a 34-3 win over arch-rival Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry last Saturday, coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns are 6-0 for the first time since 2009. With a win against Kirby Smart and Georgia, the program's dreams of a national championship would come true that becomes much more realistic.

Georgia uniform vs. Texas

The Bulldogs will wear their traditional road uniform — white jerseys, gray pants and red helmets — on Saturday in Texas.

One of the burning questions off the field heading into Saturday's game was whether Georgia's famous bulldog mascot Uga would travel to Austin to potentially meet with Bevo, Texas' live longhorn mascot, after the two competed in the 2019 Sugar Bowl.

The answer to that question is “no,” because Uga's handler, Charles Seiler, told the Athens Banner-Herald that the beloved bulldog would not be heading to Texas.

“This dog is only two and two months old,” Seiler said. “He hasn’t been on the plane yet and hasn’t been on the bus yet. The journey is just too far for us.”

Georgia vs Texas Predictions

Thomas Jones, Austin American-Statesman: Texas 35, Georgia 27

For some reason, the Bulldogs didn't reach their usual high standards on defense. A trip to Austin to face a red-hot Longhorn team isn't the best way to set things right.

Marc Weiszer, Athens Banner-Herald: Georgia 27, Texas 26

Texas is off to its first 6-0 start since 2009, but has yet to play a team currently ranked in the top 20 of the ESPN SP+ rankings. The Bulldogs are the more desperate team after stumbling at Alabama, but that could work either way. Choosing Texas is probably the smart move, but that choice is made largely in the belief that Georgia will be at its best when some of its best playmakers step up. Smart has squeezed that out of his team too many times in the past.

Bill Bender, The Sporting News: Texas 30, Georgia 24

The Bulldogs have only been underdogs twice under Kirby Smart, and that's a dangerous game. The Longhorns were the more complete team this season. Texas ranks in the top 10 in offense and defense. Georgia has forced just five turnovers this season and the Bulldogs haven't had a consistent running game. Texas averages 5.1 yards per rushing attempt, and if they manage four yards or more, the Bulldogs will be in trouble. The underdog has contested both top-five showdowns this season. We still like the Longhorns by a TD.
