How your monthly bill will change, according to Colorado Springs Utilities after City Council approval Tuesday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – On Monday, Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) proposed a seasonal increase in electricity and natural gas rates at a City Council work session. The proposal was unanimously approved on Tuesday.

According to CSU, fuel prices are expected to be higher than current prices during the colder months due to increased demand. Officials say if the city council passes it, gas and electricity prices will increase by 3.5%, or $8.71 per month, on Oct. 1.

Colorado Springs utilities say this is to cover the cost of the market price they pay for storing natural gas.

“There is a general seasonal increase in natural gas prices during the winter, and the proposed changes are in response to this seasonal increase and the natural gas prices resulting from increased demand,” said Scott Shirola, pricing manager at Colorado Springs Utilities.

A further increase will be presented to the city council on October 22nd and voted on November 12th. It will determine the increase in basic tariffs for the next five years from 2025 to 2029.
