Idaho is getting its first taste of winter

Idaho is getting its first taste of winter

We are seeing fresh snow in many parts of Idaho. On Friday morning, people in many places woke up to at least dust. Friends in Pocatello and Cassia County sent me photographic evidence this morning. While it may persist in some mountain ranges, it is unlikely to last long at lower elevations. And next week looks dry and warmer.

You've read several stories about Idaho's expected colder, wetter winter this year, but my experience is that with long-range forecasts and seven bucks you can get a cup of coffee at Starbucks. I'm not saying we won't get a harsh winter – I don't like harsh winters – but I can live with something warmer and rainier (we need the humidity).

At this point, there doesn't appear to be enough powder for skiing at Pomerelle Mountain, but with the colder nights, those of you waiting to hit the slopes won't have to wait long. I'll think of you somewhere next to a fireplace.

Some people tell me they like living through the four seasons. I think that's like saying you like VD, bypass surgery, or rolling in poison ivy. Once you're on the ice, you'll have a completely different perspective on grocery shopping More than 30 years ago, you were walking uphill on an icy sidewalk and landed on your right elbow. It still causes me problems sometimes. But as much as I dislike winter and the scrape of a windshield hours before sunrise, my home wasn't washed away by a hurricane.
