The latest data on the Israeli invasion, including casualties, strikes and displacement

For a year Israel is fighting a defensive war on its northern border with Hezbollah, a Shiite militia in Lebanon. On September 30, Israeli troops crossed the border and conducted what one Israeli officer called small “raids” aimed at destroying Hezbollah rocket launchers and other military infrastructure. If the past is any indication, small Israeli incursions into Lebanon can quickly become full-blown invasions. On October 1, Iran fired dozens of missiles at Israel in apparent retaliation.

United Nations Resolution 1701 was passed in 2006 after a 34-day war and called for a withdrawal of Hezbollah forces north of the Litani River (see map). But it was never effectively enforced. Israel's official goal this time is to facilitate the return of over 60,000 of its citizens who were forced to leave their homes when Hezbollah began shelling northern Israel on October 8, 2023. To track the conflict, we map daily attacks and raids by both sides. and collecting data on victims and displaced people. This page is updated regularly; Check back for the latest from a war whose escalation threatens to further destabilize a volatile region.

Attacks

After October 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists attacked Israel from the Gaza Strip and Israeli forces responded by invading the Strip, Hezbollah (which, like Hamas, is a proxy of Iran) fired rockets and sent explosive drones at the Gaza Strip Cities and bases in northern Israel. On September 17, the conflict intensified when thousands of Hezbollah pagers exploded, killing dozens, injuring thousands, and destroying the militia's communications networks. Hezbollah blamed Israel and responded with rocket attacks deeper into the country; In return, Israel continued to invade Lebanon. And on September 27, it carried out a massive attack on Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs (see satellite images below), killing its leader Hassan Nasrallah and hundreds of other people. Hundreds of thousands of Lebanese were forced to leave their homes due to strikes.

The number of Israeli attacks in Lebanon increased sharply in September; since the 22nd there have been at least 100 per day (see graphic below). Hezbollah has also increased the frequency and severity of its attacks, although most have been short-range missiles aimed at cities in northern Israel. The relative lack of long-range missiles may be explained by Israel's destruction of hundreds of Hezbollah's missile launch sites and warehouses.

Losses and displacement

The escalation of fighting has taken a heavy human toll. In recent days, the number of people killed in Lebanon during the conflict has more than tripled to over 1,500. Hezbollah has killed dozens of people in Israel in its attacks. The number of people displaced from their homes in Lebanon exceeded 300,000 on September 29. In recent days, Israel has asked people to evacuate in more than 20 villages, some more than 20 km from the border.

Although Israel's allies, including America, are calling for restraint, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is enthusiastically taking on the fight against Hezbollah. Israel could become even further embroiled in the war in Lebanon and possibly the entire region.
