Jake Paul's own trainer admitted he couldn't beat Mike Tyson in newly emerged footage of early fight talks

The prospect of Jake Paul taking on one of the most famous fighters of all time has been discussed for years.

Paul made his second professional appearance as part of Mike Tyson's ring return against Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020. And the next time he fought Ben Askren, the YouTube star was still working with fight promotion Triller.

At that time, the idea of fighting Tyson in a possible exhibition fight came to him, but his team wasn't so enthusiastic. Now, three and a half years later, the fight has become a reality and the two face off in a fully sanctioned professional heavyweight boxing match.

New footage shows Jake Paul's trainers warning him about fighting Mike Tyson

Around the time of Jake Paul's fight with MMA legend Askren, which he won by first-round knockout, fans began discussing the idea of a possible fight with “Iron Mike.” It was believed that the huge age difference would be an equalizer and that they would probably just move anyway.

And the YouTube star came up with the idea during a trip to one of the Askren Fight Week events. His long-time trainer and friend; Former world title contender J'Leon Love warned him against this idea.

In the video, which Paul posted just days after his November 15 clash with Tyson, he can be seen asking his team about the potential of what he described as a “hilarious” fight. Love shakes his head and laughs before giving him some sage advice.

“Crazy idea,” he began. “Do you think I could beat Mike Tyson?” Love chuckled and replied “F*** no,” to which Paul questioned his answer. “Like in less than a year?” Love then noted that a veteran of this level could find a way to win even at his age.

“Mike Tyson just got shit, he knows how to do it bro, that's just…” Paul then replies that Tyson is “a dog” before saying: “I just thought Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson? That would be hilarious.”

Jake Paul admits his mother is terrified of Mike Tyson's fight

And it seems older viewers agree there's a real chance Tyson can pull off an upset. There are concerns over the 31-year age gap between the pair, with the heavyweight icon turning 58 this summer.

Paul is an active 10-1 boxer who has scored seven knockouts in his career. But he has generally competed at the lower end of the cruiserweight division, either against celebrities, UFC fighters who got in the ring or boxers who were on the smaller side.

His father Greg Paul warned him that no matter how old Tyson is, he will be by far the hardest puncher he has ever faced. And his mother, Pam Stepnick, isn't keen on the fight at all, having grown up in the heavyweight heyday.

Speaking to Bloody Elbow at a PFL media event earlier this year, Paul claimed that his mother was frightened by his latest announcement. “She will be there, but my mother is actually very scared,” he explained at the time.

“She keeps asking me if I’m ready and asking my team if I’m ready. To be honest, she doesn't like this. He just looks scary and big and his Instagram videos on the gloves look crazy and stuff, so I get it.”
