Josh Stein defeats Mark Robinson in 2024 North Carolina governor's race, NBC News projects

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein has defeated Republican Mark Robinson, the state's lieutenant governor, in the race for governor, NBC News predicts.

Polling data showed Stein holding a sizable lead for much of the race, apparently due to Robinson's numerous controversies. Robinson has been dogged over the years by stories of lazy social media posts and public statements that have included an attack on school shooting victims, as well as anti-Semitism, misogyny and transphobia.

In the final weeks of the race, senior aides dropped out of his campaign after a CNN article linked him to a pseudonymous account on a porn site. The account allegedly declared itself a “Black Nazi,” expressed support for slavery, and shared some adult thoughts. As a result, Robinson, who denied the allegations, appeared to face ostracism. As an example, I liked to mention one of his loudest supporters in the conservative media – Jason Whitlock – who basically told him to confess his sins. And Donald Trump, who had disturbingly described the right-wing extremist as “Martin Luther King on steroids,” stopped appearing publicly with Robinson in the months before the election. Weeks before Election Day, Trump refused to give a concrete answer when asked whether he thought voters should support Robinson.

Stein, who became the first Jewish person elected to statewide office in North Carolina when he won his AG race in 2016, will now become the state's first Jewish governor.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
