Justin Fields makes an insightful statement about the Pittsburgh Steelers offense

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers still have a lot of new guys on offense, and they continue to work on those details as offensive coordinator Arthur Smith figures out his personnel and environment. For that reason, the Steelers' quarterbacks, including Justin Fields, have some closures for now.

How much freedom Smith gives Fields or Russell Wilson remained a question until Fields revealed Thursday how much freedom he has at the line of scrimmage to change decisions. On passing plays, Fields can change routes and calls based on coverages, but on a running game, Fields says he can't rely on that, and he has no intention of changing that.

“It just depends on the play call, but yeah, if we have a run play call, then we stick with that play call. One thing I'm not going to do is you know our offense isn't going that way.” “I have every confidence in Arthur to get us in the right place at the right time,” Fields said Thursday.

That doesn't mean Fields is helpless on the perimeter if they get a bad look. Fields and Smith have predetermined looks where they can “make” the call and run the second play in their sequence instead. So Fields can change the game, but Smith is very focused on his freedom and what Smith wants to attack. That's typical of quarterbacks who aren't true franchise studs.

“There are some plays where I can check a different play, a different coverage or a certain look, but on most of our running plays there are a few doses depending on what look we get,” Fields said.

However, it turns out that Fields and the Steelers have already carried out this operation. Fields and Smith have done a good job with this, and Fields is already independently setting safeguards. Smith continues to gain confidence in his quarterback, and that will come with more freedom.
